amazon started a bidding war among cities and states over where they were going to build their new headquarters, eventually settling on Arlington and Long Island. Both offered around $1.5 billion in tax cuts, employment incentives, free property etc.
special mention to Chicago for offering to allow Amazon to keep it's employees income tax instead of paying it to the state.
how is this legal? it's literally the epitome of unfair advantage afforded to a company by the state.

Well, when I worked for the state, I didn’t pay social security taxes, I paid into a public employees retirement. I know that’s different than income taxes, but I was surprised that my employer was able to do that. After 16 yrs I had to leave, but it left me with a nice nest egg to roll over.
