    Formic acid is highly toxic metabolite; it can damage the protein and lipid components of cells. Most of the cellular enzymes are made up of proteins and destruction of these enzymes can alter the function of cells, or cause them to stop functioning at all. It knocks out cytochrome c oxidase, a mitochondrial enzyme responsible for the production of ATP. The whole process of energy generation in the cell is disrupted, and a situation similar to depriving the cells of oxygen (hypoxia) is produced. Ultimately the cells succumb to this low energy state. These changes are seen in the eye in photoreceptors, cells responsible for converting light into electrical energy, and optic nerve, which relays this electrical information from eye to the brain for processing.     Such a useful compound. Oxalic acid is super common, often found in high amounts in common weeds. Not very toxic on its own, but easily converted to formic acid with distillation with glycerine. The glycerine is reusable in the reaction.

    I had a bad dream that my lack of empathy killed Akira, I drowned her thinking she was okay because she needed water. I'm going to take it as a sign from my subconscious that I am hurting her. Now that I think about it, I've never given her water, she won't drink it.
