I'm a professional programmer. Not a lot of work and the pay's reasonable. I also do freelance development now and then which ends up being more profitable but isn't very steady.

    I didn't see the question.

I lucked into the right job at the right time. All the hours I want. Locally owned by a husband and wife who treat me well and have compensated me generously for my hard work and attitude. :)

I don't know. Not necessarily. I guess it depends on what you consider high wages. Most restaurants will start cooks around 10-12 dollars an hour. Servers make 4.00 an hour. Retail jobs and the like pay about the same. Busier restaurants or fancier places can often afford to pay more from like 13-20 an hour usually. That's what I know.

Tipped employees are paid at a lower minimum wage.

No. Commission sometimes. And yes rodent is correct that's why they make that low of a wage, because of tips. If they happen to work at a shitty enough restaurant to where their tips don't at least cover the equivalent of min wage, the employer has to pay the difference. That's pretty rare though and most servers end up making at least 12-15 an hour, AT LEAST, with their tips.

no he was asking how retail workers get paid so little given they don't get tips, I didn't know commission was a thing until you're higher up on the jedi chain

on topic: sysadmin/developer, most of the development work I do is just maintenance, integration and patching though
