Once HMDs have high enough resolutions to eliminate the screen door effect and games have full body tracking it's going to completely replace 2D gaming.
I had a dream I was playing a game that looked like Bioshock and the immersion was so amazing.
I could hide behind objects like pipes and stairs and keep through the cracks and corners to look out for enemies, then I would walk around and explore at one point I saw the edge of a tall drop and I nearly freaked out.
The strength of VR is in the immersion.
2D gaming is so static and alienating compared to being inside a game visually abd auditory.

Just think, somewhere in a secret military base people have created full-immersion virtual reality, and there are people who have explored these virtual realities being able to touch and feel them, smell them, taste them.
It's crazy that technology like that is actually possible.
