Actually, my great grandfather came to this country from County Cork and made his living digging ditches for the gas company.

When arresting someone you have to state a reason. The actual decision to charge someone formally rests with the prosecutor. Arresting someone without valid reason is quite a big no-no and is something you can sue for (false imprisonment).

There was quite a noise when Thatcher brought in Internment in Northern Ireland - that was arrest and detention without any reason. It was soon overturned, because the concept is dangerous.

    Example:

Im sure there is more than one nig here who has spent the night in the "drunk tank" and then been released the next day without being charged.

That's TV cops...you don't have to be told anything when arrested. My ex only found out why she was being arrested later at the jail (of course she already knew why)

    But stating a reason isn't a charge...

Yeah well, have fun wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of your life trying to get out of the murder/manslaughter charges.

You used to be able to buy a family home in any large city on a working class wage. The economy has changed since that.

For instance with immigration you now you have to compete against hoardes of third worlders for both jobs and accomodation. That's part of why house prices have increased about 10x right across the anglosphere while wages have held stagnant. There are other reasons, like automation, financialisation and de-industrialisation too.

Kids nowadays are plain fucked. You can barely afford to pay rent "digging ditches", never mind buy a house or raise a family.

Of course you know this, but will never admit it.

"damn kids, why don't they just dig ditches"

Nowadays you can get a home loan (with excellent credit) in the 3-4% range. When I purchased my home my rate was over 15% with a variable rate that could have gone up. Fortunately, it came down every year while my credit score improved and was in the 3-4% range when I finally paid it off after almost 30 years.
