i'm going with what was used.
at the end of the 9 separate leather straps, had several unique items. some of those items were broken glass, forged metals with sharp edges, bent nails, broken bone, shells, etc all designed that when the ends came near to the body, it pierced and dug into the flesh. then you would have to yank it causing the flesh to rip open.
Yeshua was beaten 40 times with this method. it even claims you could see the bones in his back from the missing flesh.

In my dream last night this top chef was telling me how he tried this spice one time at a restaurant and it was the best he ever had so he started making it this way and shiwed me
