My main is a frost mage DPS. Which in classic wow has the most engaging skill rotation of any class.
But I'm also leveling Paladin 'cause my guild needs more paladin buffs for raids/more healers, and a warlock for farming alchemy mats to keep my main supplied with potions for raids. It's hard out there for a gnome. *sigh* -

Frost Mage used to be PVP Spec for mage only. Arcane was the PVE DPS Spec. Back in WotK i played duel specced Shadow/Disc priest. If you got your rotation down to a science you could crank out 6k DPS easy with level appropriate Legendary gear. Disc was dope for PVP heal and i even Main Tank Healed 10 man raids on Disc sometimes. J-Crafting and Inscription. Were my main professions. Since i did a lot of PVP i also always went Battlegrounds to farm honor, buy red stones and JC them into Spellpower gems to sell at auction for 100g a pop. -

In classic/vanilla, frost is the raid dps and PvP spec. PvP because of sustain like iceblock and ice barrier + CC, and raid because arcane is gimpy as fuck in vanilla and all the end game content has massive fire reists/outright immunity. Fire can nuke the fuck out of people in pvp though, they just don't have great survivability. -
