how can a prison also be a jail? you fucking brits and your vernacular
they don't have 'county' jails here. 'local' prisons(which tend to be in or near towns and cities) just have a separate wing for remand prisoners awaiting trails and sentencing. they will also have other wings dedicated to long term prisoners and usually other wings which will house short term sentenced prisoners, as well as a 'vulnerable prisoners unit' for the likes of you and the other sex offenders and grasses. that's not to say we don't have prisons that are dedicated only for sentenced prisoners, like 'A' cat prisons for the worst offenders and 'C and 'D' catagory prisons for more trusted prisoners(what is often referred to as a local jail is usually a 'B' cat btw), they're often in more rural places away from built up urban areas. 'D' cat prisons are open prisons and only the most trusted prisoners get to go there. if you have any history of escape or absconding then you'd never get 'D' catted. there's also double 'AA' cat which house the likes of terrorists and child murderers and the worst of the worst, these will be prisons inside a prison, usually either an 'A' or 'B' cat.
but yeah, jail and prison here pretty much means the same thing. we have had this discussion on these boards a number of times Bill Krozby, i even remember discussing it on zoklet an all.
edit:i should have mentioned that when you first get sentenced you'll be in a local 'B' cat jail, they are also known as dispersal prisons. then once you get sentenced they will categorize you as either an 'A, B, C or D' cat prisoner, depending on things like your offence, past offences and other things like your conduct in jail. once categorized you'll get allocated to the prison where you'll serve your sentence.
