You'd be better off just developing ways to detect faked video or evaluate how reliable/prone-to-faking it is (i.e. lower resolution videos would be easier to fake).

That's going to be possible for at least some time, and by the time we have ml systems capable of perfectly faking video we'll probably have some social systems in place to deal with it.

I for one am looking forward to telling everyone my leaked nudes are just faked, I get up to some freaky stuff.

with blockhain technology. unless you have a better idea.

What you're getting at is, in my opinion, an idea quite possibly worth pursuing.

But you need more than just blockchain.

Blockchain provides one particular piece: assurance of integrity that video A and timestamp Y are indistubably linked.

The problem, which has been brought up ITT, is that the integrity of the video itself is not guaranteed by this mechanism.

Blockchain is invaluable for proving sequences of events, but not necessarily that these events are genuine.

Now, with completely freshly designed device hardware, you essentially delegate the trust to a higher authority, but you still have to trust that authority.

But yes, ultimately, I do believe the idea has potential, it's just that it can only solve more and more problems by adding more and more dependent technologies.

    It's a start though.

    exactly my point.

proving the sequences of events. in this case its to prove that the video file ypur using as 'evidences' came straight from a camera C as alleged, straight and unaltered.

in the past defendants and prosecutors both tried to place the witness at the crime of the scene / not at the scene to lend credibility to their claims and prove their cases and in the near future i believe they are going to need to place the camera at the scene of the crime and with the proliferation of deepfakes and AI-assisted deepfakes video and audio forensics are going to me a major part of the whole thing.

as of right now law enforrcement / authorities can just take 'surveilance footages' from across the street / other bussinesses as evidence and will be taken as a fact [plane striking the pentagon, remember], but in the near future this can and will be disputed.

i think benny was talking about this way earlier than you did.

The only thing blockchain will functionally provide is a public record that can't be hacked.

The only thing hashes will prove is that one file is still the same.

Where does authenticity of content become ensured? That's the important part and it's the actual difficult part that fatzooks cannot admit is intractable.

If the idea is to say "this file does match what the camera originally said it got!", What's to stop someone from just uploading a deepfake as if it had just been captured? You just need to report the uploaded file hash is for tampered file X.

I did before, you should resurrect it if you have a good post.
