What state? You need quality soil, nutrients, water and sunlight.
It's called weed for a reason. If you run a full season, 8 Months at least, you shouldn't get less than 100g per plant. -

If i were to grow five plants in my closet with a good light (100$ give or take) and wanted a harvest in 4 months (would more time be worth it) what kind of yeild could an amature grower who did extensive research and put in the effort and investment in whatever i might need expect?
Preferably 250ish or less of a total investment. -

$100 is not a good light. You want a 1000watt HPS or MH lamp and some kind of ventilation system which can run you several hundred dollars. -

im for sure going to get it done for a lot cheaper than that the first time through. i dont feel like investing in a cheap light only to have to replace it when i want to get more serious though so what are we talking? 300 for a serious light? how significantly can i increse my power consumption without being investigated? I mean 5 plants is a misdemenor here so im not to worried about it. -

Anyway, I'm planning my own closet grow. I was considering buying a 250w HPS because one grow would provide enough for most of the year, but now I think I may just combine my 150W HPS and UFO light I can't remember the wattage of. Bought the latter cheap from China years ago, direct from the manufacturer; stores simply rebrand many standard models and sell them at a much higher price, the only real benefit being greater quality control and return policy. Read a while ago that some newer models of LED grow lights were fanless. I hate noisy fans.
My 150W gave me a great yield with just two plants using fairly small hempy buckets + screen of green. This time I may go for six, for variety. I already attained mastery of the technique from my last grow, learned all the small nuances, problems to avoid, how to optimize everything. I want to see how the two lights affect growth. It's a wide range light, quite bright.
I already have coco-coir and nutrients. All I'd need is some orca film for light containment and reflection, buckets from home depot, bag of perlite, a fountain pump to drain the runoff when the buckets are watered and flushed, and maybe a few other minor things. Should be under $100. -

Those 150w lights malice are talking about are dinky as fuck. I used to sell them to old ladys growing turnips I would only use those for seedlings and baby clones.

LED light systems are pretty good, I remember it looking way different it was 550w with LED and you could grow anything indoors because the LED was full spectrum, you could even grow poppies and cactus if you got the air right. Looks like they changed it to full LED but its definatly the same company.

The smallest you want to go for weed is 600watt, the small lamps which can be wired into any ballast. It takes a bit of work and space but thats the only way to grow cannabis in my opinion.
Set up kinda like this (but with the ballast outside the room)

You could waste money and time on a set up and get bunch of males or hermies.
You don't know what polinated your plant to form seeds. Most likely self-polination and those first gen seeds of uncontrolled self-polination (S1) aren't stable at all, often have bad vigor, mutations and tend to hermie a lot. It takes some work and time to stabilize a strain.
If another hermie plant in the growroom polinated it, the problems get even worse.

CFL should only be used for when your plants are too bigs and the light cant reflect through the canopy lol.
