How's life under that bridge, by the way? You got enough shelter from the elements?

I've experienced various shades of homelessness throughout my life.

That, and my experiences with drugs (heroin addiction, drinking in back alleys and shit), and just generally living in some shady fucking neighbourhoods, I have met A LOT of different homeless types

All homeless people fall into one or more (usually some kind of mix) of the following categories:
    1. Addicts. Probably close to 100%... Addiction is complex, and some of these people might even have become addicts BECAUSE of how their lives turned out, and the vast majority - arguably all - are self-medicating for mental illness or just trying to deal with the circumstances they find themselves in.
    2. Mentally ill. Mental illness comes in a wide variety of flavors, and, most can still technically work IF they could find employment easily, but then you also have the severe schizophrenics who straight up can't function in even the simplest workplace setting.
    3. Ex-cons. Having a criminal record can be a barrier to finding employment.
    4. Voluntary "lifestyle homeless" types. This has subcategories to it, ranging from people from comfortable middle class lives wanting to experience something different, to people who are in poverty but living right on the cusp of homelessness, and decide "hey, I can save some money if I stop paying rent". I technically fell into this category (among others) when I chose to buy a cheap mini van and live out of it full time to save money.
    5. Victims of the perpetual unemployment cycle. The longer you go without a job, the less desirable you become to employers. This is a brutal catch 22 that can be affected by any combination of the above categories, or even, in some cases, just straight up shitty fucking luck.

It's a very complex issue that can't simply be reduced to "laziness" or any other such nebulous term.
