those of you who remember the 80s, i was a schoolkid at the time, when the media first started reporting on schoolkids carrying knives. at first we were all like 'who are all these kids carrying knives, i don't know anyone'. six months later after months of news reports you were starting to get the odd rumour about so and so's brother carrys a knife, or that big kid in the 5th year. maybe another six months and a few dozen more sensationalized news reports later and you would see the odd kid while having a smoke behind the bike sheds pulling out his new butterfly knife and doing little tricks with it showing off. within a couple of years every kid who wanted to be a badass had to carry a knife if he wanted to look badder than the next guy. and then everyone else figured from watching the news and reading newspaper reports that if they got into a fight at school now and didn't have a knife they'd be fucked. so now pretty much everyone had to carry a knife to defend themselves. fastforward to the 90s and we were getting regular reports of kids and teachers getting stabbed in school with all these shock horror headlines about 'how could this be allowed to happen'?
it was the fucking media that caused it all in the first place. if they hadn't have kept making big over the fucking top stories every other day about kids and knives nobody would be bothering to carry knives around coz nobody would never have felt the need to carry one around in the first place. fucking media, they knew exactly what they were doing and what the effect of their reporting was going to be from the start. they create the threat, then the authorities step into place as everybody's 'protector', keeping us all safe from this growing fucking menace in our society. then the world and his dog ends up thinking they rely on the authorities for their very existence. what a fucking clever scam.
and this is why the world is the way it is now. i'm guessing it was a similar story in the states an all.
