2019-06-05 at 9:17 AM UTCAny of y'all ever had some real shit bangin' outta your trunk?
A few years ago I had two 12" Audiobahn subwoofers that I got used off of craigslist for $80 (for the pair).
I also managed to find a speaker box for the two of 'em at a chain store for super cheap because it wasn't quite perfect (had some kind of imperceptible flaw).
I also managed to find a deck for relatively cheap by looking around for sales.
And then (and this was the most expensive part of all), I found a cheap amp for sale. I know I should have spent more on a more quality amp... That's what it all ultimately comes down to... But I got the subwoofers for $80 and the box for $50... So I settled for a $250 amp. I can't even remember the brand/manufacturer. All I remember is that I made sure that it was rated for 1,000 watts RMS (wired at 1 ohm). I honestly don't even remember what RMS stands for, but I remember my research telling me it was the most important evaluative metric for an amplifier.
Finally, I got all the cables and other miscellaneous parts I would need from various online vendors. I even got... I wanna say 2 gauge... but it's been like 4 years and I can't remember all the specs as well as I'd like. But I knew that having 2 x 400 watts, it was gonna take some quality electrical wiring (nice and thick... that's what she said).
I put it all together myself to save yet more money. It was by no means easy (for someone like me with next to no experience installing car audio... I had a quasi-decent system back in '03, but a high school friend helped me out... well, he pretty much did it all).
...
And then... a friend of mine, doing that natural male thing that dude's do, went out and outdid me within a few weeks by getting two 12" JL7's, and some top-end 6x9's, and the whole nine yards... and he got it all professionally installed. It cost him about $15,000 total (compared to my ~$750 total - excluding (my own personal) labor), but it did blow my shit RIGHT OUT of the water. -
2019-06-05 at 9:31 AM UTCfucking $15k
reminds me of a friend who put a $3k stereo in his first car... which was worth like $800. -

A video.
Also, it was a minivan (which of course affects acoustics... my last car audio system back in '03 was ONE SINGLE 8# SUBWOOFER, and everybody who rode in that motherfucker remembers that shit... it was a Toyota Celica, 88/89).
I was also living out of it at the time, as may be indicated by the video. -
2019-06-05 at 9:33 AM UTCoh yeah, and that time he had to drive his mum somewhere, we got in, started the car and it started blasting 'choke me, spank me, pull my hair' at ear-shattering volume

You shoulda heard it tho...
Like, I felt like top fucking gangster rolling around with him. People talk about the "car you can hear from a mile away" myth... his was the real deal.
But yeah, his car was like a ~2004 Honda Civic (and this was about 2015/2016).
I even remember this one older Asian gentleman approaching us in an underground parking lot (after my friend's sound system started setting off car alarms), complimenting him on the sound, but saying "now you just need to put it into a better car." -
2019-06-05 at 9:36 AM UTCI said "8# SUBWOOFER"... I meant '8" SUBWOOFER'.

I've recently abandoned the whole idea of putting too much stock into coincidences...
But...
I was actually listening to that track the other day (Xzibit, circa 2000?). -

yeah, I finished high school in 2004 so it would've been from a year or two before -
2019-06-05 at 10:37 AM UTCI used to alway have bangin systems in my cars. Had two of em stolen. They busted out my window the last time. I finally decided to go with stock systems, and just get good speakers. Now I can only blast it once in awhile. Too old to blow my ears out like I used to.

I long to be that very twat.
Or at least, to have the ability to be said twat.
These days, I do still love the vibrations of a powerful set of subwoofers (INB4 SEX JOKES), but I actually have come to realize, with time and experience, the fundamental truth that:
Just because I'm super into a particular musical piece at any given moment, it does not automatically imply that everyone else around me is in the exact same state of mind/mood.
I'd use it responsibly... But I still want it. -
2019-06-05 at 4:51 PM UTCUse it to blast out Michael Bolton hits if you really want to turn heads.

2019-06-05 at 4:56 PM UTCI have fond memories of driving around in my 1974 Volkswagen convertible that I installed a Pioneer Supertuner 8 track in with 4 6 x 9's. I had to cut the rear end of my glove compartment out for the Supertuner to fit.
