She was barely able to keep afloat financially and her Social Security and Medicare weren't able to keep up with her bills, especially with her mounting medical problems. Her husband had passed over ten years ago. Her children all lived out of town and she only heard from them on her birthday, Christmas and Mother's Day.
She was contemplating ending it all so she looked up "suicide" on the internet. After much research, she decided the surest and quickest way to end her anguish would be by shooting herself, especially since she still had her husband's pistol in his bedside table. Her computer search recommended that shooting herself in the heart would be the surest course. Gertrude looked up the anatomy of her heart and found that her heart could be located directly behind her left breast.
She sat in her kitchen chair, fumbling with her husband's pistol, getting used to the feel, weight and smell of the weapon. She took a deep breath, said a quick prayer asking God to forgive her and…pulled the trigger.
She was admitted to the emergency room with a gunshot wound to her left knee.
