What's worth it and what's not?

How do criminals manage this ratio?

Depends on how much you get for each item you steal in an hour.

I'm not a criminal but I would imagine stealing stuff that's small but expensive would be better, if you're not looking to use weapons or be noticed. Guns comes to mind. Pistols. Some of these cash america places have an awful lot of money in jediels and guns.

Then there's drug dealing. I wouldn't really accept anything less than a couple thousand per hour if I was trying to make money from crime. I know way too many good ways to make money illegally to accept less.

It's all about three main factors:
    1. The trade-off between risk vs reward.
    2. Ethics.
    3. Knowledge, skills, talents, and expertise.

I, personally, have quit most criminal activity at this point in my life based on the second factor.

The first factor has always been a frequent consideration as well, though. I would never do an armed robbery of a convenience store, for example. That's gotta carry a lengthy sentence no matter what country you reside in, and you stand to make maybe a few hundred bucks. Drug dealing also carries further risks beyond getting caught by the police. It's a dangerous game, and rival gangs don't exactly send formal "cease and desist" requests to try and resolve the issue peacefully. Certain types of fraud, however, if you know what you're doing, can really come out relatively high reward in relation to risk.

Finally, your area of enterprise can be a very important decision. Some types of fraud can net hundreds of thousands of dollars a day. Heck, some Lithuanian hacker apparently managed to fleece Google for over $100,000,000 recently.

Didn't (((Freakonomics))) have a bit about how drug dealers earn less per hour than McDonald's workers, but people were attracted by the idea of becoming a kingpin some day.

So street hustling is basically CV building, like an internship for niggas.

Well if i ever were to commit a crime for monetary gain i'd probably have to invest a lot of time into it before everything is up and running. But if the payoff is great afterwards, then it's worth it i guess? In general, most criminals don't have any sort of impulse control, so they'll do the quick and risky stuff and subsequently end up in jail.

People go into crime seriously underestimating just how hard it is to make good money. They watch all the movies then think ideas like yours about starting a dnm. They fail to realize that if it was that simple then everyone would be doing it. Most get so far into crime by the time they realize this that its pretty much too late to do anything else and they don't really know how to do anything else. Then they just reside themselves to a life of petty crime with the odd fairly decent score now and again.

Drug dealing is somewhat appealing to some people in that you can fuck your woman all day long, you don't have to leave for work so you can keep an eye on her at all times so she doesn't have a chance to cheat on you. If she doesn't like that lifestyle there's plenty of other sluts that do.

But some do get good. Some also hold regular jobs. The ones that get good, likely like to learn. So they can aim their knowledge on certain subjects.
