A 3/8" liquid line fil-ter-drier for my daughter's A/C. I checked the thing out finally on her new house this week and, damn, there are some real fucking morons out there who have no business working on HVAC equipment! Even after giving her condenser coil a thorough cleaning, her head pressure was 50 degrees above ambient temperature. It should be about 15 degrees or so. Even after removing a couple of lbs. of R-22 to get the superheat above what it should be it is still condensing at 40 degrees over ambient. I'm going to have to remove all of the refrigerant, remove and replace the liquid line fil-ter-drier using an oxy-acetylene torch and silver solder, pull a long vacuum and then replace all of the Freon to the proper amount. And, it costs me almost $25 for a new liquid line fil=ter-drier. Luckily I've got Freon, a recovery machine and vacuum pump already. Job probably would cost $500-$1000 from an HVAC company. Also, I had to bring my large bolt cutters to remove the lock from the disconnect box and my special keys to remove the anti-huffing caps on the Schraeder ports. All because some moron probably never pulled a vacuum on the system when they installed it. My daughter complained about her high electric bills last summer. Her husband replaced all the windows in the house recently and, with my A/C repairs, her bills should go down significantly this year.
