    Edit: No, I had that wrong. He had passed the bill in Massachusetts that was almost exactly the same system as Obamacare but found himself opposing it in the 2012 race

    Just goes to show that most believe there should be insurance for all. That’s why he can’t just get rid of Obamacare without a replacement, there would be a major uproar.

    I mostly just meant it was amusing that the republicans all claim to be against it when it's more or less the same as what they put forward in the first place.

    as I understand it, it basically just forces everyone to buy healthcare (as well as subsidizing it) so that a bulk discount can be negotiated with the major insurance providers - several of the providers have already pulled out of the program because they're not seeing the profits they were promised.

    to me it's always seemed to be about maximising revenue for the major providers more than actually helping anyone.

    the two most functional 'socialist' societies at the moment, China and Iran, are probably more democratic (ie. state policy follows the will of the majority) than any western country. The difference is that they don't respond well to outliers; there's no real recourse for you to effect change (outside of convincing the majority) if you don't agree with them.

    Yeah, one drives around in mobile execution chamber vans dragging people out of their homes at 3am to be tried and executed on the bus and then chopped up for their organs to be sold on the open market, and the other one chops your head off for kissing a man. Sounds real democratic to me.

    no you didn't. even if your examples were true (China's largely unsubstantiated and while Iran's penal code can call for the execution of gays, very few, if any, have been executed solely for that reason), they don't prove anything relating to democracy or the will of the people.

    typically (statistically) the Chinese value an ordered society over most else and don't really care what happens to serious criminals. Iran's an Islamic country; gayness is explicitly forbidden in the Quran and so there's little public concern for bumsexuals. The Ayatollahs have actually gone to bizarre lengths to fold them into society; homosexuals are encouraged to get sex change operations in order to serve the social feminine role if they cannot serve the masculine.
