In ye olde times, the times of Rome, the male form was considered to be most beautiful. So much so that women resolved to bind their breasts because of it. It was a cultural thing and a pretty gay one at that which probably blew over from greece, however in ye olde times around the Renaissance, old roman/greek culture was pretty much appropriated by the people of the times. Now that i think of it, it's actually quite obvious if you look at art from the time period. -

Some of the best poets (certainly some of the most influential) of the pre renaissance period were Muslim (Hafiz and Rumi being the best known). Muslims aren't known for their boundless unbridled creativity but that's also not what we're talking about at all rn -
