    No.

The thing about strongly held convictions is that rationality is no longer at the foundation of it all.

When it comes to certain issues, it goes...

    1. I believe X.
    2. LITERALLY ANYTHING that supports argument 1 is fair game in a debate.

    It happens all too often.

I kinda see why abortion is kinda reasonable in some situations...

My only problem is reconciling that with the fact that I almost certainly would not be here today if abortion were common place many decades ago.

My grandmother was 15 when she got pregnant back in the 50's. It's REALLY hard not to consider then when thinking about the whole abortion debate.

Who gives a fuck if you would or wouldn’t be here if something different had happened in the past? Do you realize that for you to have come into existance at all, a single specific sperm cell from the many millions in your dad’s busted nut had to fertilize your mum’s egg? If literally ANYTHING changed in the events leading to your conception, even something minor, then you wouldn’t exist. If your dad had shot his load even 1 second later then you wouldn’t be here. Or if he fucked her missionary instead of doggy style.

What you’re saying is almost the exact same thing as the argument you mentioned earlier, that you are denying the prospect of life to someone else by not having children. Those children don’t exist yet, so they don’t matter.

You’re right, if abortions were more widespread a hundred years ago then a lot of us wouldn’t be here. But that doesn’t matter because that’s purely hypothetical. You can’t change the past, only the future.

Abortions should be legal, and commonplace, and to take it a step further I think also pretty soon we should start enacting population restrictions. Because the way things are heading right now, we’re fucked

I'm not even disagreeing with the central thesis here.

It's just, it really does sound funny to hear someone say (like in the pic from the OP): "Chelsea Clinton complains that there was no abortion there for her grandmother."

That's kind of paradoxical, at least on the surface of it.

I mean, let's say that one day your mother just flat out confessed right to you that she "really wanted to have an abortion while she was pregnant with you, but it was illegal and socially unacceptable so I didn't"...

You're really telling me that wouldn't impact you at least on some level?

    I find that dubious.

Yeah, I mean if we’re just talking about the OP then yes that is a fucking stupid argument in favor of abortion. This idiot probably didn’t even realize what she was saying, or how that would be memed the fuck out of on Twitter.

Forget about your grandparents, the best argument for abortion is the fact that tens millions of impoverished, uneducated, fucking losers are making babies at an unsustainable rate.

People always talk about reducing carbon emissions, and recycling more, and all that gay shit. No one ever talks about just NOT MAKING MORE PEOPLE. Let’s go back to maybe like 1 billion people max.

Christ can you just imagine how much time you’d save in traffic

Ok, what if your mother told you that you were actually born with a conjoined twin... The doctor asked your mother to choose which child to let live and which to allow to die, and you find out that she chose your twin (to live), but the doctor was dyslexic and ended up saving the wrong one.

If you seriously tell me that hearing that would just result in a *shrug* "meh, makes no difference", I accuse you RIGHT HERE AND NOW of being disingenuous.

    No I really wouldn’t care.

In the completely impossible scenario you just mentioned, it’s a 50/50 decision with no right or wrong answer. At the time I would have been just a baby with no autonomous consciousness. If she had chosen to kill me instead, then I wouldn’t be here right now to have any feelings about the matter. And the fact that I am here now means I’m the one that survived which would make me grateful, if anything.

Do you have zero interest in the forces of fate?

Like, if you had a plane ticket for the flight that hit the towers on 9/11, but missed it because you were too hungover after a spontaneous run in with an old friend resulted in a random night of heavy drinking, you really wouldn't contemplate the significance of that at all?

That's just absolutely foreign to me.

I guess we're just different people.

I had an ex that was “abandoned” by her mother when she was a baby. She had a really bad complex about it.

I always tried to tell her that it’s not like her mom gave birth to her, looked at her and was like “nah I don’t want this one” and tossed her out. Like, if some OTHER baby had been born instead then she would have chosen to keep it.

The mother simply made a tough decision based on her life circumstances at the time. And that decision had nothing to do with the person that baby would later grow up to be.

But she didn’t see it that way. She just kept sabotoging her own life, drinking herself into oblivion and throwing up every other meal.

So in a roundabout kind of way to answer your question, no I will never understand that kind of thought process. And I don’t believe in fate.

Fun fact though, the creator of Family Guy, Seth MacFarland really did miss his 9/11 flight because he was too hungover from the night before, and narrowly avoided death. Lol

I almost referred to that scenario specifically, but decided to withdraw his name because I have no idea how common knowledge that tidbit is.

But I most certainly had that in mind.

My point from the get go was never meant to be explicitly anti-abortion. It was just about, at least for me, it can be kinda surreal to argue in favor of something that would mean you wouldn't be here today.

But we’re not talking about YOU, or about anyone living today for that matter. We’re talking about future, unborn people that don’t exist and will never exist. So they don’t get to have a voice in the matter.
