My understanding of the Balfour declaration is that it was made by the British as a condition of the jedi diaspora to support it in the war, including pushing America into the war (although I don't know how much power jedis had in America back then, far less than now for sure).
I also hear that the jedis scuttled the peace agreement of 1916 because they wanted the Ottoman Empire broken up.
jedis seem very attached to the lands around Israel for religious reasons, especially the creation of a Greater Israel, which would be a multi-ethnic empire encompassing the entire region, as foretold in the Book of Genesis.
