there is a recent movement in NYC in which Italians are now being open about how they are tired of Americans thinking that they're all Mafia linked. and that coppola and scorsese's early year films of the 1960s and 70s which made lots of money for them, kept this images going. Great films, truth to certain families but it sent a wave of false impressions.
of course there is more than an element of truth that in the 70s that Italian kids used this to their advantage. girls love bad-boys. -

i know several italians who watched too many episodes of 'sopranos' and try to mimic their idiocy...while having zero mafia relations. -

I stated the majority do not want this image imposed onto their culture.
and I stated it also aided for the few who liked it without connections because it made it easier for them to be liked in school as potential mafia or gang affiliated badboys when they were just average minded kids.
