I have a little waterfall that I'd like to put a waterwheel and generator on, just for fun.

I don't really want to spend any money besides on things like welding rods, but can spare some time to salvage parts, what would could I use? A car alternator or something? I have a fairly good toolshed.

Will you be doing your coils yourself?

I'm thinking of using an alternator or old wiper motor.

I found an old aluminium motor engine cooling fan that should work as a fairly basic water wheel.

Should i envision a cylinder like design?

I've wanted to do this for years.

I'm not much of a handy man and don't have much experience with DIY engineering, but I also enjoy a challenge.

I'm gonna start looking into where I would start on a project like this.

    In the meantime, *subscribed*.

    I still might myself.

I have a goal of living completely off the grid, but I do want electricity, and I'm considering using a combination of solar panels, hydroelectric generators, a battery bank for backup storage, and then a biodiesel generator for extra backup / emergency depletions.

Come to think of it, maybe even some wind turbine generators. The mechanics of that shouldn't be all that different from hydroelectric.
