The only interesting things happening in space are the private things, like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
Everything everyone else is at is literally 1960s tech - the Russian Proton rocket that supplies the ISS first flew in 1965 for instance.
The kind of people who become bureaucrats are only interested in getting paid, they don't generally care about doing a good job, and sure as hell aren't interested in having to learn new things.
I bet if Trump had offered Elon Musk unlimited shekels to go to Mars within 4 years he would have said "yes". -

I think the stuff China is doing is very interesting and likely to overtake the "private things". I expect China will have a man on the moon before US or private business will. -

China is blowing big money on space, especially when you remember they don't spend it all on crap like diversity.
They are the #1 country by space launches, but I don't know anything about their launchers, etc. -

The point I was absentmindedly trying to make here is that he cut funding and didn't make any effort to restructure, didn't appoint an auditor or analyst or anything, basically didn't do anything to improve the agency then 'hoped' they'd be able to initiate an entirely new space program and succeed inside 4 years. It's absurd.
Now with his talk of a 'space force' it seems as though he means to fold much of NASA's function into the military, which will likely just lead to even more cost for even less result thanks to MIC contractors looking to maxi-milk the government's budget -

It sounds like he doesn't understand the technical issues, and also thinks NASA are a bunch of low-energy losers.
But NASA haven't done much to convince anyone that much different - it seems like every large project they start they fuck up (like the Hubble), they wind up delivering a dog (like the space shuttle), or they take forever to deliver on (like the James Webb Telescope).
Putting robots on Mars seems to be about all NASA can do correctly - and they've been doing that since 1975. In other words they can't seem to do anything new.
I don't think it's a stretch to blame that on the corporate structure of the organisation. -
