2019-01-21 at 1:21 PM UTCIt was never the majority that did that. There's reason why it's been passed down through historical record. It was something which we pretty collectively realized "we" had fucked up on. And the ultra religious minority is the same now as ever. But it's the minority.

We just have different God's bow. Say something about the jedis, or race and IQ, and see what happens. -

Yeah, we collectively realized maybe we fucked up with Socrates... during the Renaissance. Nearly 2000 years later. We weren't even close to sure we'd fucked up until the Enlightenment. The ultra religious (by today's standards) minority weren't a minority in Europe for most of human history. Strict orthodoxy maybe, but for the most part western civilization consisted of people who went to church every sunday (and other days of the week) and who put the word of God above the word of any man. Socrates wasn't murdered by the minority. He was put to a trial in front of his peers and found guilty. And even he believed in some (by today's standards) whackadoodle semi-religious shit like daemons.
It fucks me up how people think atheism has always been a normal thing and we've always believed in free speech. Saying our modern conception of free speech/freedom in general has existed throughout the history of western civilization would be as ignorant as saying the same for egalitarianism or other qualities people value today. Our modern notion of freedom finds its roots in revolutionary France more than it finds its roots in any part of western civilization from ancient Greece through Medieval Europe. -
2019-01-21 at 1:59 PM UTCThe people recording history also don't count as most of us.
Stop taking things seriously. I'm too high to be coherent. -
2019-01-21 at 2 PM UTCLet's put it this way: "blasphemous libel" laws still exist in parts of western civilization. And they existed in even more parts until fairly recently. Our idealized notion of free speech, especially the one we have here on totse and its offspring, honestly has no real historical counterpart. Our idea of free speech is, frankly, revolutionary. It is not a point of view shared by the majority today, and it certainly would not have more support at any point in history.

2019-01-21 at 2:01 PM UTCNo it certainly hasn't been the norm. But like evolution, there's a reason - at least in our short histories- that free speech has always emerged at the other end of whateverthefuck. At the very least it's a guiding ideal. That's not the case everywhere
-
2019-01-21 at 2:08 PM UTCIt's quite laughable that you guys believe free speech (or just simply freedom) exists...Go stand in the airport and shout "I have a bomb"..then try to claim free speech as your defense.
If there are any caveats (of which there always are), it' isn't "free". -

You're right, monarchies and totalitarian regimes that suppress free speech have never existed in the west.
Good thing "the western world" isn't any sort of real sociopolitical entity that the UK is beholden to.
If you can't obey the law, get the fuck out of the country, no?
*puffs joint*
Or don't get caught, and try to change it.2) Good point. My inclination is to say fuck them, but that's mostly because when they say something, I know their intention is to hurt people. If I heard a conservative saying that trans people should be rounded into detention facilities and slaughtered, I'd fee the same way. If Jonathan swift had had a history of infanticide and cannibalism, he might've been in trouble. Maybe I'm too high to articulate properly, but it's kind of a potter Stewart situation. I know free speech when I see it.
So even if the individual Muslims in question have no history or record of doing anything wrong, you won't afford them that same protections, based on the group they belong to?
How do you know they're not joking? Because they're Muslim? What if they said they were? You're not entitled to find a joke funny, after all. -

2019-01-21 at 3:41 PM UTC1. Honestly if the Muslim didn't have any history of anything fucked up or violent, I'd probably let him give big ups to sharia all day.
2. Democracy (or insofar as we aspire to be one) is predicated on robust free speech. Unfortunately, those caveats need to be built in, because a good percentage of the population just aren't that introspective, and will do some stupid shit at the drop of a hat. It's not absolute, sure. But I don't feel like my right to bear arms is being infringed because I can't own a rocket propelled grenade. For all intents and purposes, free speech is still your right. When someone who's essentially a mediocre web comic is punished for what was clearly said ironically, it's.....weird. I just assumed people were smarter than that. The intent is important. -

Why not? Why does "free speech" mean "I can say whatever whenever with no consequences from anyone or anything" rather than like the thing we all mean when we use the term "free speech" in conversation? -
