I'm not going to touch the jedi conspiracy theory thing but the Porter/Jick study cost a damn lot of people their lives and many more their freedom. It's kinda scary, like as a clinical practitioner you have power over life and death but like the damage you can do is limited to what? A few hundred people over a career? But as a researcher publishing on a hot topic where big pharma has an interest you can be a big contributing factor in a drug epidemic.

You can't really blame that one study though, purdue did hella shady shit and knew exactly what they were doing with oxycontin. It was analogous to what happened with heroin back in the day, they told everyone it "isn't addictive (inb4 narc)" and give people syringes to shoot themselves up with at home even and a bunch of people got addicted, they just all died out.

True, the opiate epidemic is a complex situation and there were definitely more actors involved than that study alone and many of them not even in involved in the drug supply chain, but it does seem like that study was a catalyzing event and major contributor to what, relatively speaking, has been an era of wild over-perscription of opiates.

Relying on Doctors to limit people's access to drugs is not a good strategy, and the prescription system is ill conceived and has never worked.

Shotgun charge them with a dozen charges from one simple possession charge (i.e. Possession of drug paraphernalia , possession of drugs in the vicinity of a school zone, possession of a dangerous drug (a real charge, dreamt up by real retards).

Send them to jail on 8 charges stemming from getting caught with a drug.

Set their bond astronomically high so they could never dream of bonding out

Let them sit in jail for an extended period of time while they wait for court.

Approach them with the promise of dropping all lesser charges if they just plea to the greatest one.

A lot of fuckers do that, just to get out.

We really do not wait long in America for the court system. A few months usually. In some countries they wait years to even make it to court. I'm sure you've watched the same prison shows I have. Jail time is probably the least destructive part of the whole process anyway. I don't know why I wrote this post but please argue with me.

It depends, if you agree to extending, and waiving your rights to a speedy trial, which a lot of people do, because it can take a long time to build a defense, then you could potentially be waiting years. They don't tell you that before you waive your rights for a speedy trial though. Most DAs would love to agree to waiting because then it gives them more time to build/prepare for a case, although, in big cases, they've already built their case long before you were ever charged.

Sometimes if you press for a speedy trial, then they'll throw it out just because the court system is so backed up that they wouldn't have the time to try the case. It depends on which court it is in, but it does happen. If every person pressed for a speedy trail at the same time, they wouldn't possibly be able to hear each case in the allotted time frame.

habitual drug use is a symptom of a problem or deficiency, not the root cause. people who are happy or at least satisfied with their lives don't typically engage in socially problematic drug use.

And often so, the user seeks that out to fulfill a "naturally joyous" time/moment/event they lack in their lives.
