How does Lanny remain a programmer/coder when his drug of choice is alcohol?

neuroplasticity, his mind is used to being soaked in ethanol so he has learned how to work around it in such a way that it isn't a problem

Programming can be challenging and mentally demanding but I've been in the same job for a couple of years and there's really only a handful of basic things that ever come up so it's pretty much autopilot at this point. Boredom is more of a problem than any of the work being difficult. Drunk programming makes it a little more challenging (although you kinda get used to it after a while) and just generally less boring.

Also these days I probably write as much email as code. The organization I work in is pretty dysfunctional and has a lot of systems with strict ownership, so I can easily spend more time trying to diplomacy other people into doing the work I need them to do than doing my own.

The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

I'm still in the honeymoon phase, so I haven't quite reached that point yet, at least not where it's fully stabilized, although there is sometimes some grunt work where I unironically have to use COPY+PASTE programming (with some slight modifications of course), or some other routine stuff where I can go into autopilot.

And yes, that is when the temptation to get high/drunk is at an all-time high.

And Slack messaging and video conferences are a significant portion of my day as well.

And also, in my case especially, just getting used to some of the best practices that I have little hands-on experience in yet (like writing unit tests, making sure everything is linted, etc).

That's the low dollar skanks, the high dollar ones invest in generic wet wipes...
