   No. It still works. But they've glued the transmitter cap on now with epoxy glue, so it would take some work to unscrew it. But if you were in an emergency you could just smash the entire plastic casing off and hack free calls no problem.

   What you'd do is unscrew the transmitter cap from the handset, then remove the transmitter from the transmitter holder. Once that's done, you'd look for two prongs which protrude from the back of the transmitter. Touch these two prongs at the same time to any metal part on the phone booth. Every time you make a contact, the resulting shortcircuit fools the phone into believing a quarter has been passed through. So, if you are making a local call, you only need to touch once. If you are making a long distance call, you would wait until the operator requests you add coins, then touch once for every coin required until the operator states the correct amount has been received.

    Fun fact: In the old days, when you hacked the payphone and fooled the operator into thinking coins had been dropped with the shortcircuit trick, if you deliberatly overpaid, the operator would then activate the phone remotely to release coins into the change. So, if you tricked the operator into thinking 20 quarters had been dropped, and the charge for the call was only 75 cents, the operator would then release $4.25 in coins into the change chute. Also, if you simply just called up the operator and said you put a quarter in and the call didn't connect and you lost your quarter, the operator would dump a quarter from the phone's cash box into the change chute. Didn't take them long to figure out, but long enough for a lot of people to make a lot of cash.
