Modafinil is a part of a class of drugs meant to promote wakefulness.
It's not really a stimulus per se.
I think the whole point of it is to provide the energy/wakefulness benefits of stimulants, but with no euphoria.
that became kind of a Joke when Fen-Phen was found to kill people left and right during the time it was popular in the 80s and 90s for rapid weight lost. it was effective as shit but sadly one of the Fen's (Phen) killed people. so they just gave out Fen (or Phen because I forget which one it was) and doctors would laugh and go "Don't worry.. it's the safe fen"

It's only a binge. Perhaps his work peformance is down and he wants to bump his performance like a Baseball player does with enhancements.
I mean.. If Meth if clean and produced by a pharmacy rather than someones bath-tub gin lab made it.. it would be a good drug in small doses. It's what Pilots in WWII used and I believe use today in combat.
being that he cares for his looks (as I used to in the day.. I too used to spend most of my paycheck on my clothes) it's possible Our friend here is a former Pilot doing Sorties? got hooked on it because the Military gives out their own brand of it.
It's not a good drug because of the Bathtub Gin issue. as I use as a metaphor that was internet humor for a while. people during prohibition drank liquor that was made from shit quality alcohol that blinded people or destroyed their livers. Meth is also passed around through a persons mouth during "holding" (or maybe that's crack.. i forget which) when purchasing on a corner. I had a friend from Highschool who would only go to bars with me if I took his ass to get Meth or Crack from some dude on a street corner in East Oakland. Fuck sakes.. watching the dude pull it from his mouth and then my friend putting it in his mouth.. then couching around me like a gutter whore.
really gross but somewhat humorous to watch. I tried and tried to get him off of it. His Grandmother loved me because (apparently from what he said) telling him that she trusts me to get him off of it one day. Shit I had my own vice to deal with. Alcohol mixing with meds. not for a high. for severe back problems and depression. this dude was the ultimate SSRI. he was funny and fun to hang out with.. but only after an hour or two after he came down off of his drugs. when he was on it.. he would just sit and say nothing while I talked.
I tried in everyway to annoy his high but he said it was comforting. LOL -

Clean meth definitely means "less unhealthy", which is why I use a complicated chemical washing procedure to remove (most of) the impurities. But it still has some long-lasting effects on the body and especially the brain.
I'm already starting to feel kinda anhedonic and apathetic (probably due to depleted dopamine). -
