Windows 7 keys weren't/aren't embedded into UEFI/BIOS and aren't part of Microsoft's Digital Entitlement program that automatically validates a known, already licensed computer once online after reinstalling.
You can either purchase a key standalone from plenty of places online or use a tool like daz's, like aldra (again ) suggested.
EDIT: The only way you could potentially extract your key is if you happened to have a SOFTWARE registry hive backed up, which I doubt you do. -

I know bits and pieces.
Daz is a company that makes models for Poser? (3D software company). Why Daz? or is short for something else.
I think I'll call MS and let them talk their shit to me. and then I can tell them that Best Buy sold me this piece of shit. maybe they will just send me win7 backup if this is possible without them accusing me of some BS that I get the hint they will. since I'm sure they hear it all day long from people. -

I'm pretty sure you can get a new key online or use a different tool like, say, daz's, for example.
These are just thoughts off the top of my head though. -

Honestly, I use Ubuntu exclusively, but that's just for consistency.
And I never use Linux GUI's. Nothing against them, I just do all my GUI work from Windows, and do a bunch of programming, networking, and other such stuff using Ubuntu cloud servers.
Ubuntu is definitely a good way to go for someone new to Linux. Simple and straightforward, and lots of support available.
Now if you wanna specialize, in, say, penetration testing or other security / hacking type stuff, I hear Kali Linux is good.
Then there are a few lightweight style distros for minimalists, where you just build your software collection from the ground up.
And if you just want to try Linux before you "buy" it (remember, it's free, huge plus), you could try running it on an Oracle VM. But that's a whole other story. -

Hey, can I run something like 3D Studio Max (Old version from 2004) on ubuntu? I know there is something called an emulator (GIMP?)
if so, how does it work exactly? You load it and then you can click on exe files.. or is it having to type commands in the OS thingy to get it to run? and is it choppy or does it work pretty good? -

I don't know much about 3D Studio Max, but I do use GIMP with some regularity. It should work just fine on Ubuntu.
If I'm not mistaken, it's kinda meant for Linux - being an open-source alternative to MS Photoshop (much akin to the relationship between Linux and MS Windows). -
