I fucking loathe Clannad and you have to watch both horrible seasons to get to the only part that's remotely good/tragic but it's definitely consider a "canonical" entry for tragedy anime.
Hachimitsu to Clover and 3-gatsu no Lion (both anime based on manga by the same author, think they have the same production team because the art style is similar and distinctive, good but takes a little getting used to) deal a lot with damaged characters with tragic backstories and varying levels of depression. Hachimitsu no Clover takes longer to develop that angle, so maybe don't start there. Neither are all sad all the time, but I think you might like them.
Oh yeah, my gf watched Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso she tells me it's good. I think she has it downloaded as well.
Hachimitsu to Clover, Put that on my "to watch" list.
3-gatsu no Lion, Oh yeah the Shogi guy. When i saw it in passing i kind of dismissed it on grounds of being about Shogi, and i thought: Well that's kind of lame. Probably pretty shallow of me to do so, however, i have redeemed myself by bookmarking it. Think i'll go watch Hachimitsu to Clover first though. -

That was my first reaction too. I know nothing about shogi and don't think it's particularly cool at all but I was able to enjoy it a lot. Really relatively little of the plot actually revolves around the mechanics of shogi and it's never like you're actually looking at a board and expected to have some kind of reaction when someone does something like all yugioh style. -

Cool i'll keep it in mind. I guess the fact he is a pro Shogi player kind of is a plot device in that way.
