After the prison, the group is scattered and desperately seeking a home, which they think they will find in D.C. This migration leads them into trouble, and they are forever transformed by horrors encountered on the road. After many losses, a few of which are then-pivotal characters, they eventually find somewhere that appears to be their most stable dwelling yet. Just when they settle down and try to achieve something normal, war breaks out, and the stakes are higher this time. This is seemingly the ultimate struggle of the series that defines the success of humans in the region.
