It's on the market right now and I have money. Should I buy and fix it up to satiate my nostalgia?
Put a dollar value on your nostalgia, then take things like the future demographics of the area, the future income of the area, the desirability of the area, school district, etc into account.
Houses haven't been a bad investment in the US in a long time, excluding a bunch of mostly minority neighbourhoods around 2009, so there is a lot of inertia behind the housing bubble.
It doesn't seem like an awful investment, but first add up the following:
resale value - nostalgia + investment cost + investment time
If >0 might be worth a punt.

My childhood home is in the gheto of the gheto. Memories of people getting jumped, my mom getting arrested, and the initial stage of crime. Crazy to think about how I've psychologically evolved into the person I am today.
