SHOPLIFTING

Also clearly appearance has a lot to do with it like you cited in the shoe example. Just raggedy clothes in general or baggy clothes/coats I'm sure get looked at more closely? Also hat wearers I'm guessing? How less likely are you to watch a person wearing nice slacks and a polo shirt?

All depends on the experience of the LP involved. Experienced LP who have been doing the job for many, many years will watch everyone equally; they won't judge a book by its cover near as much. But yeah, generally, the nicer the clothes the more chance you would have of slipping through unnoticed.

Ever catch anyone using booster bags?
    Are you LP at work?

I think the detacher or hook works quicker than cutting the tag. But your right about dressing well and being quick. Best to pre plan the things you want. I often fill shopping carts at big stores/groceries and just walk out super casual.

IMO, you're better off lifting smaller items and returning for store credit so that you can buy whatever.

No receipt returns? Seems a hassle. Plus you have to go back into the store you stole from.

Bump for wanting to know the answer to this.

Almost every major department store has at least two LPs working at any given time. Usually three. Usually, one will man the ceiling view ports, which are one-way mirrored square panels about 10" x 10" embedded into the walls near the sub ceiling, which run along a kind of tunnel above the stock rooms in such a way that the LP can quickly navigate the entire sales floor by way of this wooden tunnel. There is usually about 6-10 of these viewing ports set inside the tunnel walkway which runs around the entire floor 360 degrees. That LP will use high-powered military grade binoculars behind the view ports, with magnification so good they can spot the price tag amount on an item three quarters of the way across the sales floor. The second LP will man the CCTV cameras installed in the LP office, and will be in constant communication to the other two LP by way of walkie-talkie. The third LP will be right out on the floor itself, dressed in plain clothes, usually hovering around the exits.

That doesn't seem terribly inaccurate other than the HIGH POWERED MILITARY GRADE BINOCS.

When I got caught shoplifting at Kmart once, I walked in and this Asian dude was just walking around and looked at me, I looked at him and went onward toward the cough medicine aisle and pocketed two tall bottles of tussin, knowing nobody on the floor could see me and pretty sure no cams could, but clearly I was wrong.

I then went over to the dog food aisle and pretended to look. Then I went to the main counter by the doors and asked if I could grab a western union form and bring it back. The lady was like, yes of course, but she had this peculiar look on her face and I knew something was up. Either way I was committed so I just left, and of course the Asian dude from the beginning comes up behind me, "hey you need to stop. Come here with me. We say what you did"

Obviously I was like "what the fuck are you talking about?" I laughed and played it off like he was out of his mind. He was more nervous than me actually and he's just like "no cmon man we saw it" and I insisted he was crazy and I left and started walking briskly away toward my house, then of course like 3 other guys started running after me and they all stopped me and I tried to wrestle away but they all hung on to me and it was 4 on 1 so I couldn't do anything.

So I'm like fuck, I resigned myself to the fact I was busted stealing cough syrup, and I ask am I going to jail and they say not necessarily.

They took me to the back room and I signed up for this program where I didn't have to get charged or get police involved but I had to watch like 4 hours of 'don't steal' videos and pay a $400 fine, which I obviously accepted.

Ultimately I ended up watching like 30 minutes of footage and payed $150 and then I just stopped because it was stupid. Haha. Nothing else ever came of it and I still shop there to this day, all the time. I've also had my license checked by a cop since then and didn't have a warrant so in other words, if you ever get caught stealing sign up for the program I did and then just don't do it.

Good story. No, it's true about the binoculars. Day & Night Military Army Zoom Binoculars. One set and a wooden stool at each viewing port.

Why is the stool WOODEN? Clearly this can't be the standard at every store.

It's wooden because then it lasts for decades of heavy use.

No, because shifting a metal stool may alert the shoplifter below. Often, the shoplifter is filling bags from the cart directly below the view port, close enough to hear any disturbance above in the corridor. Wood makes almost no noise.

Wait a second. Where are these fucking stool people? Just sitting in plain site under the ceilings?

There is a corridor beside the sub ceiling which runs all the way around the store. Every 50 feet or so there is a viewing port. Each port is setup with a stool and binoculars, in such a way that LP can quickly move from one port to the next to "follow" a shoplifter on the floor and detect additional actors.

And this is in your Targets and Walmarts and such right? Clearly the dollar tree doesn't have such a thing.
