I actually meant to read one of his books back in the day but lost interest
yep, I know exactly what you mean. I tried to force myself to like industrial (actual industrial like throbbing gristle and spk) because I found the history and aesthetic fascinating but I just didn't enjoy it - finally figured it was because it was about the performance; not experiencing that and just listening to the 'music' meant I was missing out on way too much for it to be worthwhile. like listening to the audio track of a movie.
I really enjoy the more cryptic/esoteric/symbolic stuff that some of those groups did though - Wolf Pact and Scorpion Wind were pretty good, short projects involving boyd rice and douglas P from Death in June among others:
not sure if it's the sort of thing you'd be interested in, but I like to be able to envision the 'story' and try to make sense of it
