It wasn't ready to be shut down. the new Shuttle program isn't in place. Now Independent people like Elon Musk will take it to the next level. but something about a race of privatized missions "We risked money-it's ours now Sucka's" mentality will take hold.
I wish I could of visited Florida (As much as I don't want to based on what people say about it)
or at best see a launch from California one day. I still have never witness the trails seen over the San Franciso Bay.. I wish they would make it a big party and have them launch it on a platform off of the San Francisco Bay, up and over the bridge in a counter-directional launch over the pacific.. it takes more fuel to do this because the planet spins causing tugs in flight.
tugs is my technical term for Centrifugal force
