The dude used to be a real professor -- all the stuff you've seen of him, his talks etc, were from actual lectures when he was talking to college kids. Of course he used metaphors, because he was TEACHING them about psychology.
Then of course he'd use metaphors in his book, to appeal to a mass audience.
If you read his actual work, like his magum opus Maps of Meaning, you'll read his "actual" scientific stuff that's more up your ally.
