    Trinitrotoluene (/ˌtraɪˌnaɪtroʊˈtɒljuiːn/; TNT), or more specifically 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, is a chemical compound with the formula C6H2(NO2)3CH3. In industry, TNT is produced in a three-step process. First, toluene is nitrated with a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acid to produce mononitrotoluene (MNT). The MNT is separated and then renitrated to dinitrotoluene (DNT). In the final step, the DNT is nitrated to trinitrotoluene (TNT) using an anhydrous mixture of nitric acid and oleum. Nitric acid is consumed by the manufacturing process, but the diluted sulfuric acid can be reconcentrated and reused. After nitration, TNT is stabilized by a process called sulfitation, where the crude TNT is treated with aqueous sodium sulfite solution to remove less stable isomers of TNT and other undesired reaction products.

    black powder isnt an explosive. its a deflagrant. meaning it doesnt explode...it burns really really really really really fast.

    'real' black powder is charcoal, sulfur, and a nitrate of some sort.

    TNT and nitroglycerine are made basically the same way, with TNT being made from toluene and nitroglycerine being made from glycerine. nitroglycerine is easier to make.

    nitroglycerine tends to explode at inconvenient times so nobel decided to mix it with an absorbent which made it more controllable...making dynamite. it was/is popular because its cheap.

    thats the thing about nitrating stuff...specifically TNT and nitroglycerine. if all the waste reaction products from the acids arent removed...i mean ALL...the end-product is unstable and tends to spontaneously burn or explode. and by spontaneously i mean anywhere from a few minutes...to a few months.

    thats the main cause of do-it-yourself bomb makers dying.

    they dont.

    they also dont do it with 'old' dynamite because the stuff tended to separate which removed the safety factor of the absorbent material and resulted in spontaneous splosion.

    that is for the home-made stuff. the stuff made in 'real' factories is cleaned properly, the proper pH is achieved, and the impurities removed, eliminating any problems.

    aren't firecrackers and M-80s made out of black powder? I mean I'm no expert but I thought that's what they put in bullets to create an explosive of sort to fire the bullet and project it
