Fear of God

  1. #1
I grew up in rural south Germany in a Christian community (lots of mulit-cultural shit going on, though) and I was taught the same stuff as anyone else but somehow God never scared me even when I still believed in God. I was never afraid of hell, even while commiting sins because I was sure that God must have better judgement and if he really was such an asshole as it was taught in the Bible than I'm down with sinning as well because fuck that dude.

I really always wanted that fight. I still do. "Climb the highest mountain. Punch the face of God." is one of my favorite things I have ever read. Yea... did you ever want to fight God 1 on 1?

My parents weren't any real sort of religious but I went to a religious school for a couple of years as a kid, all of my friends were religious, so I took the idea of the christian god for granted. I don't ever remember being afraid of god, I think even most of the nuttier non-cult christian sects (SDA in this case) spare young kids the fire and brimstone until they're a bit older, but I do remember trying to bargain with him a lot. There was this scary ass dog that lived next door and when I had to walk across the neighbor's lot I remember kinda praying or whatever, saying I'd pay more attention in church or ask for fewer things, if he somehow intervened and kept the dog from biting me.

Hahaha! Out of all the things, this. This is one of the funniest things you've ever posted.

I have done this all the time, too. Isn't that what praying is? Feeding God's crazy attention addiction to get some shit back.

Yeah, the absurdity of literally praying to be saved from cujo is what makes it a story worth telling. I don't think of that as a particularly formative experience but in retrospect I think it highlights how trite immature conceptions of the divine are. Certainly there are heady and robust ideas about the abrahamic god floating about (I have a lot of love for Anselm, Pseudo-Dionysius, and Aquinas) but it's illustrative of more common approaches to western religion I think, a magic shoulder to cry on, a thing to be bargained with, something ultimate ultimately made crude by crude human habits.

I would sometime's quasi-pray when suicidal, a pascal's wager sort of prayer. "If you exist/there's anything out there.". Usually asking to be killed/die peacefully in my sleep or to be made better/helped.

I used to fear god because when I was young my dad told me if I think the word nigger or fuck I'd go to hell .
thats what gave me my ocd
anyways I no longer have a fear of god just going to hell, there is a chance hell exists albeit a very small chance so you gotta always be careful about throwing niggers at rocks

Before the flood earth was filled with evil monsters and sexual deviants. I remember a verse about an angel coming to earth and all the humans wanted to rape the angel. I believe the popularization of homosexuality in modern culture is leading to this.
