America’s perpetual “my team is better than yours” mentality is the problem. Not its leaders. Presidents are nothing more than pawns. Americans regularly strive to fulfill their own self righteous needs by constantly stroking their ego’s need to win. That will be the downfall of the country. Not Obama, not Clinton, not Trump.

it's a popular adage in the US (I honestly don't know how common it is in day to day life) that you shouldn't discuss politics or religion in polite company. on the face of it it prevents arguments, but never actually having to defend your viewpoint or understand someone else's ends up creating sectarian echo chambers and enclaves, an 'us vs. them' mentality that ignores your group's faults and amplifies the other's
it certainly doesn't help that practically and in terms of policy, there's little difference between the parties at their highest level -
