SUBTITLES

2018-06-05 at 7:34 AM UTCI watched a bunch of episodes of Attack on Titan recently with both the english dub and english subtitles... Except they'd obviously been translated from the Japanese original by different people, because while the gist was the same the phrasing was completely different. I couldn't understand anything, felt like I'd been short circuited
Bootleg subtitles are the best though. I remember getting a cam rip of Daredevil a while back with the most retarded subtitles ever. Two cops are discussing some guy who'd killed himself jumping out a window and the subtitle just read 'he fuck himself up'. -

You couldn't understand the one with dub or subtitles? Which one was better, subtitles I imagine? -

no I mean it had both the dub and subtitles, and they were phrased differently from one another so it was like the characters were saying two slightly different things at once -

Ah ok.
Yeah, I hate that. I haven't experience the exact thing, but sometimes it happened that while watching a movie in english the subs would be different. Same meaning perhaps but different phrasing, and I hate that. It puts me off and I can't follow. -

Anyway - I subtitle everything. I have a bigger problem remember spoken conversations than written ones and I have enough problem remembering anything in general.
Beyond that reasoning I grew to greatly appreciate those moments I was like “WAIT, I thought they were saying THIS” and got owned by the captioning, or when I’m watching something new and it gets quiet or hard to hear accents etc
Captioning is the shit -
2018-06-05 at 11:03 AM UTCdo you americans really need subs to watch british shit? sometimes american shows like reality where they got a real accent they'll put subs and i still find it annoying coz i can understand what they're saying anyway. i've grown up on american tv and movies tho.
do you ever watch american tv and find they are using accents that don't sound quite right to you? like they're purposely talking in a way that other english speakers could understand better, without the usual american accent. sorta like they sound maybe all upper class american or summing?

2018-06-05 at 11:34 AM UTCNo, not British, but for Irish accents I can’t understand sometimes lmao

2018-06-05 at 11:38 AM UTCI can watch Corrie don't even need subs.
I can also understand really American southern accents like boomhauer from king of the hill.
Maybe it's because I grew up around immigrants that don't speak much English. At my last job the people I communicate best with were Named Shabu a short fast Indian dude that spoke very quickly.
And Jean Marie an East African guy that spoke really slow and he was fluent French but ESL
I got along better with those two than any of the white people. I like working with immigrants.
Or if you want to hear some crazy black people accents try watching the wire

I was the only one on here that could read bling posts. The man was a genius but you all thought he was retarded because he was a Brit.
that whole country needs to stop speaking and just learn sign language

I had difficulties with understanding "Our Friends in the North" because of their strong accent, and couldn't find the subs anywhere.
Dad's Army also wasn't easy, mainly because Arthur Lowe mumbles and is fast when he talks.
