I have been asked for a quote

To paint/stain a fence but I dunno how much to charge by the linear ft. It's like 2 miles of fence, even at a dollar it's like 10 g's but I'm out of my depth here.

A local company has 7 per ft listed, but not the amount of coats and such, 70 grand to paint a fence seems a little outrageous either way.

Calculate how much paint you need and add a percentage for labour?

Get paid in gumdrops and snickerdoodles, and then smoke an old corn cob pipe in a tree while you trick the neighborhood kids into doing the work for you

It's about 64k in sq ft, I gotta stop at a paint supply tomorrow and see how many gallons I'll need. Gonna meet a dude I may partner with at the site. Maybe he'll have a better idea about this.

thanks for specifying that the fence was linear, I thought it might be quadratic or something
  7. #7
Got a picture of the kind of fence and condition of it?

What is the height of this fence? Also, "like 2 miles" isn't exactly a precise measurement to try and calculate the square footage, but we can get a vague idea if we have the height.

Also, what is the existing condition of the fence? Are you going on have to scrape a bunch of old, peeling paint off? Is it rotting anywhere? Mold or mildew growth in places?

    Lot of variables here.

Ah, didn't see this until after I posted.

I did a quick search, and I found prices can vary wildly from as low as $2 per square ft to $9!

You'll have to factor in the cost of paint, of course, and then any labor/prep you'll have to do to the fence prior to painting and then the actual application of usually 2 coats.

    I just saw it too.

    Start with charging them $3.50
    Then go from there.
And if the job is too big, do not take it.
You will not finish it and not get paid.

tell them u need a check for the materials up front but double the price of whatever shermens william quotes.

then rent a trailr and use some rubber malets to break the fence down and load it up nicely and go put the fence up at ur house

It's basically 2 miles, accounting for both sides. 6 ft tall, roughly 1/4 inch gaps between boards. which probably add up to something substantial given the scale. Fence is in decent condition, very little prep to be done.

Oh fuck that. I'd quote them $5 or something and then just pick up a couple of Mexicans to do it for $2.

You'd be best to use sprayers with tarps on that, and the job will go a hell of a lot faster.

    DO NOT PAINT THAT

it is pressure treated AND stained. the paint will peel and bleed the embedded PT solution through the paint

    you need to re-stain it.

    and.

call a few companies in the area to give you estimates for a similar project and base your cost on that.

    This should help a bit.

I agree...you don't paint PTW. Preparation is probably your main work load to do it right and whether you spray or do it by hand which I've actually seen. Also type of paint used and whether it's a simple patch job or you warranty it.
