Thus the saying, dead as a door nail.
Have you any idea how fucking ridiculous that sounds to us people who possess a modicum of common sense?

Anywhoo, WE ARE getting a whole new deck before the shingles, along with gutters and downspouts. That’s why it’s costing me 2 arms and 2 legs. A huge tree fell down in my front yard ruining the front gutters. This has been an eventful week in my household. The shingles are made by Owens Corning, they seem like good quality. Comes with a 30 yr transferable warranty.
a whole new deck is expensive as fuck...but if its an old deck they didnt nail down the wood as well as they do now due to the change in codes after all the hurricanes. (in florida, anyways)
the more you pay for shingles...the better they last. -

Originally posted by -SpectraL Having been a roofer for many years, I would warn you that roofers don't bother sealing/patching holes in the plywood underneath the underlay. They are supposed to cut out a small piece of thin tin plate and nail it over cracks or holes in the roof before re-applying new underlay, but the majority don't. They know you won't be able to see anything after the new roof is on anyways. Also, if a lot of water got in there, the plywood is probably soggy and all rotted out and will leak again, even with the patches, so it's best to have the roof ripped, change out entire sheets of soggy plywood while the roof is open, and then apply the underlay and tiles only after that's done. Roofers won't bother doing any of that.
thats old tech. now they blanket the entire roof in a self adhesive membrane that is completely waterproof, self-sealing to holes (within reason), about as thick as 90-lb paper, and stuck directly to the wood. the funny part is theyre not supposed to stick it directly to the wood, but to a nailed-down layer. now the next person who is has to tear the roof off is fucked because that shit is impossible to remove once its stuck to the deck.
from what ive seen the new trend is for 'some guy' with a roofing license to find other guys that might or might not know how to throw on some shingles, which almost always turn out to be mexicans, and pay them a few dollars 'per square' to tear off and shingle a roof in one day. this lasts for a few months which is just long enough for 'some guy' to get a few more houses, make a few grand, then either move out of the area or change businesses. -

Yeah, I’m going for quality, don’t wanna have to worry about it. I’ve just put so much money into this house this year. Wasn’t planning for this, but who does? The value of my house has almost doubled since I bought it, so I’m keeping it up. I love my little corner of the earth! -
