Are mental disorders real?

  1. #41
mental disorders aren't real in that they're distinct classes of things

everyone has traits of every disorder to a lesser or greater degree

diagnoses should only be used for convenience, but too many people looking to "understand themselves" will use the label as a convenient crutch to avoid developing a real personality

I'd be more interested in knowing how many behaviour altering "diseases" are caused by things such as viral, fungi, parasites, prions, and potentially nano-virus and bio-weapons that we could in theory already be influenced by.

Imagine the impact it would have if every criminal had some sort of bug that made them do criminal shit, fucking lol.

Taxonomy is interesting, as it is used as a weapon and a social tool.

For instance to destroy positive behaviours you re-label them - being a good father becomes having an authoritarian personality, caring about someone's health becomes fat shaming.

Pretty much any healthy thing can be pathologised if you critique it well enough.

You also prevent research into abnormal behaviours by calling them normal, when they clearly aren't, and attacking those who attempt a good faith inquiry as being xyz-phobic.

I think the symptoms are real but any categorization into distinct disorders will probably always be imperfect at best if not total BS.
