It's getting weird now, the TPP and TTIP seemed like the US trying to lock out china and russia out but with trump and a more inward looking US (as far as "trade" is concerned) it seems like that project is going down. but what next if that ploy didn't work?
For awhile it seemed like any country that didn't bow down got labeled a "rogue state" ie sovereign and got libya'd. Thats why they're scared of NK, the idea of nuclear proliferation and a growing number of sovereign states. -

cold war i think, is the best thing everyone could wish for. its just as good as a hot one in terms of budget priority and military spending, defense contracts and kickbacks, etc etc
but without the ugly businesses of people actually dying and protests and precedent calling widows.
and almost all major NATO members have their own defense industries and lots of people in those government are getting rich too.
Neoconservatism 101: Keep the economy booming through defense spending and the population unified by being at perpetual war with an enemy - real, or in this case, manufactured.
They have tried to do this throughout the 21st century using phony wars in the middle east, but people caught on and there is growing anti-war sentiment in the country. This time, instead of stoking the fear of arabic terrorism they're trying to create tension with Russia. Probably, like you said, to bring about another cold war. -

absolutely, if you can convince a population that there exists a threat to their existence that is beyond their control, and yet you can protect them from that threat, then you become their king. they will do anything you tell them to and give you pretty much anything you want because they will think and feel that they cannot survive without you. their very existence and continued survival then relies completely on you being there to protect them. its controlling a population 101, and its been used for millennia by control freak types. the threats can be real, imagined or as usual just vastly exaggerated.
where do you think all those old stories of dragons and monsters come from? the threats can be pretty much anything from dragons, monsters, witches, demons, murderers, rapists, pedo's, terrorists, drugs, foreign invaders, disease, aliens, natural disasters and even wrathful gods. anything that poses a threat basically, all that matters is that the people believe it and feel it is too superior for them to defend themselves against it, while you can, and then you pretty much own those people and they will be perfectly happy for you to do so.
and this is the reason why the media are constantly fear-mongering. its not just about sensationalizing to sell papers, there is way more value in being the protectors.

Cold war started long ago. Even before Ukraine and Syria, information and economic warfare had been ramping up for the last 20-30 years. You could probably point to Putin and Medvedev kicking out the western-backed oligarchs and reversing Yeltsin's efforts to sell Russia off as a western vassal state, so uh, a new cold war started literally as the last one ended. -

considering the fact that anyone private citizen and corporations these days have the ability to ejaculate whatever they fancies into deep space,
