my favorite are the ones in brazil and argentina who literally get their food crops taken away to be used to make ethanol for fuel to be sold to people who can afford cars. -

Hindus are only forbidden from eating cows, by the way. Buddhists aren't vegetarians either. Buddhists take and use whatever alms they're given, including meat, booze, and ciggies. The Dalai Lama himself eats meat for health reasons. -

Traditional Hinduism informs Buddhism similarly in the observance of ahimsa. There will always be people who don't religiously follow their religion, but that doesn't mean that the Catholic Church doesn't largely abhor child sodomy, for example. And you're right, the Dalai Lama eats meat sometimes for health reasons. I think he's worried that if he dies, China will groom his replacement. My take on this is that he's a political figure first, and a religious official second.

Waste not, essentially. With cigarettes and alcohol it's a different matter. Monks aren't supposed to consume intoxicants, especially alcohol, but some do if it's offered. It would be rude not to.

2018-03-21 at 3:14 AM UTCSo after glancing at some articles about this "quinoa crisis" it's apparent to me that there are some predatory multinational food corporations, and what you need to understand is that veganism doesn't drive them, profits do. Yes, veganism has created the market, but vegans who eat quinoa aren't even privy to the decisions of the leadership in companies that meet that market demand. You can't really make a case against an entire diet on the basis of some unintended consequences of capitalism, especially when the people who operate that company are the only obviously responsible parties. Soya appears to be the prime offender, and an example of how simply being vegan doesn't mean you can't still exploit people.

Oh, monks. Yeah, I'm aware that many of them do eat meat, some even using drugs and alcohol. I admittedly don't have a lot of insight into what motivates them to eat meat offered to them, but I agree that it's probably out of politeness, and also maybe a bit of utilitarian reasoning: because they know refusing won't bring the animal back. Regardless, Buddhism and Hinduism conceived the earliest moral systems known to have acknowledged animals as possessing inherent value like humans, and I think the majority of vegetarians (alive and dead) would trace the lineage of their position back to ahimsa. -

As though there aren't any horrible consequences of mainstream agriculture? What exactly are you trying to demonstrate? Capitalism turns any belief into poison if it pays well. Why should that responsibility fall upon the vegans, and not the shareholders?
