there's a million articles on pubmed and ncbi that go more in depth with their own topics of interest than stephen hawking ever has. believe it or not, quantum physics is not necessarily the apex topic to master in. its an unusual and important interest, but all it is is an interest. i design intelligence tests that a few hundred people usually take, and probably more once the mobile app for the site gets released. the difference between psychometric statistics and quantum physics is that quantum physics is the mainstream catch-all term for "wow thats really profound man", when if you think about it, creating basal components that assess intelligence is similar to a quantum realm but in a cognitive/metaphysical context. that specific interest is too niche to appeal to the public, and my other interests like neuroscience or psychiatry/pharmacology would require an unnecessary 8 year degree to be able to make any ripple at all in the field, no matter how innovative and relevant the person's ideas are. you are simplifying the circumstances to "hes successful and ur not and becuz hes successful he's mor smart"

Bad popsci can be that, but the gods of scientism like Sam Harris get torn apart by real scientists and philosophers because they provide a distorted view of actual science. Hawking's popsci is more like a very good conceptual overview of cosmology, and that's why most scientists hold it in high regard and recommend it for public reading.

And with only a surface level understanding of his work you can't actually appreciate it - you can only accept it for what you're told it represents.

You can apply this level of deconstruction to almost any aspect of life and claim the same thing. And it's not necessarily wrong, but most things we appreciate we do so at least partially by proxy. I with my poor musical ear and rudimentary understanding of theory can still appreciate Mozart's contributions to music. You can still go to Hawking's wikipedia page, read about his life, and appreciate how much he advanced the fields he worked in. Or you can be a degenerate and have gay sex with scron while pretending to be a girl.
