   you could argue efficiency of doing backend site processing with python vs. php/ruby/whatever else is popular nowadays, but that's neither here nor there given it's not affected by lanny's coding dis/ability

   In any case it's not whether or not the code is efficient that I was commenting on, it's the stark lack of features. Of COURSE NiS's code is viewed as "efficient". There's literally nothing but a bare bones bbs with a style sheet tacked too it.

    I wasn't around for the dial up BBS, but totse's web bulletin board was originally some software Jeff Hunter made himself. It was full of bugs, such as page stretching. Eventually Jeff Hunter just said screw it and bought VBul.
    
    This software doesn't seem to have those problems. So why upgrade?
