    And don't you think it's very odd that he can manage to function well enough to have paid off his college debts, essentially work two jobs at once and then go back for another degree? This is not normal alcoholism, this is somebody whose equilibrium cannot be soiled through the use of substances. Even if it's just out of sheer envy, I propose we all fly out to CA just to crack open his admin skull and look at his GABA wiring. CF can probably afford to finance this venture, so he's the man to convince.

    because that's his personality and what he's naturally interested in. he's obsessed with it and even made a thread about it on here before. also functionality isn't the same as being sane or happy (not that anyone mentioned happiness.) there are very "successful" people who go nuts all the time.
    
    my experience with science types is that a lot of the things they do are driven by ego, getting a better grade than your peers on a test and whatnot. i don't really feel like that's a healthy way to live life, but it will make you functional if you base your self worth on other people who are all trying to do the same thing. they're all competing with each other. i'm not trying to shit on lanny or say that this is his situation, i'm just trying to illustrate my point that being functional doesn't necessarily say anything about your mental health.
