The analogy is about how Washington DC used to literally be a swamp until they drained it and built the nation’s capital on it, now it’s a methaphorical swamp where greasy politicians live. So he promised to “drain” the swamp and bring in people with integrity etc. What actually happened was he brought in a bunch of Wall Street sleaze bags and DC insiders, just like any other politician would.

Trump will start it before the next election so that construction is going on during the election.
That way he can say if he is not re-elected the construction will be stopped.
Immigration restrictions and the wall is very popular in America.
In fact immigration is unpopular everywhere, even shitholes like Mexico, we just aren't given a choice on it.
