Gas and rent are definitely hella higher in the bay area. But that's the right ballpark for food. There's a Chinese "pay by the pound" place a couple blocks from where I work. Two rounds and you can't eat more if you tried, it's like $15~$18 but on average pretty close to your $11 figure. Japanese place near here that's $20 for all you can eat and there's sushi and shit. I think food prices line up fairly well.

I definitely agree, I just mean if you look at the "average price" of a meal in SF it's going to be heavily skewed by more upscale places despite there being a profusion of smaller places which are quite affordable.

You're right, Airfair at SFO isn't much different, sometimes cheaper being a hub, yet car ownership and to house a car or have it "smash and grab a few times a year" can add up. insurance is way higher than the midwest. Rent is insane. 550 is what you could pay in Oakland for a 2 beedroom house some 5-10 years ago. in the worst neighborhood in the bay area. now those same neighborhoods are like 3500-4000 for the same houses to rent.
even a 1 bedroom in a crummy area with crack dealing still going on up the street, is 2000.

Yeah, I definitely don't deny that total cost of living is higher. I think most people in the city don't drive so I don't really count that but if you do have to drive for some reason the situation gets worse. Rent is murder though, I'm in the "crummy area with crack dealing and $2k rent" group for sure. Mixed feelings on the whole, most days I love the city (and the proportionately higher wages in my industry) but every now and then, and more often recently, I feel kidna cut of from nature and just generally like wading through a fucking sewer to get places isn't justified by the lifestyle. Especially considering I could probably weasel my way into working remote if I pushed it. -

No I know, just making an offhanded comment. I've almost entirely stopped going to upscale places, I think the biggest contributors were places with a dress code that turned me right the fuck off because they didn't allow jeans. I just thought "wtf am I having to put slacks on to impress a fucking restaurant?" and I was done. -

Not true. I've seen that type of thing all around the world. It's to make it "fancy" so everyone has to dress up in there and enforce a particular atmosphere they want.
It's just really gay, I never go to a restaurant to have an "experience" and play victorian dress up, I go to have delicious food directed towards my gay face. -

It's not about atmosphere or dress up. It really is to give the owners an excuse to kick out undesirables without being accused of being racist.
I can go into a wherever I want wearing whatever I want because people can tell what I am from the aura I project.

Most places I've been don't really enforce those dress codes, but it's definitely for that atmosphere. You can't kick out undesirables if they are dressed according to code. That's a stupid idea. But the whole idea of dress codes is stupid. The simple fact is that there are just as many restaurants with top quality food who aren't being cockfags about their atmosphere. I've eaten at a LOT of high end places but nowhere has really impressed me compared to smaller places that focus on the food itself. -
